Featuring

Rag'N'Bone Man

Rag'N'Bone Man appearing at this event

Rag'N'Bone Man (aka Rory Graham) has a holler like hot buttered rum. Loaded with disparate and cross generational influences, the sound of Rag'N'Bone Man is both hugely idiosyncratic and massively moving. He combines a purity of spirit with his unique brand of acoustic hip-hop soul into a force which is entirely his own. He is the real deal.

Wolf Alice

Wolf Alice appearing at this event

North London's Wolf Alice take their name from a book by Angela Carter. Originally a solo project for frontwoman Ellie Roswell, it soon expanded into a full four-piece band with Joff Oddie (guitar, vocals), Theo Ellis (bass) and Joel Amey (drums, vocals). Eloquently described by Clash Magazine as ‘the lovechild of folk and grunge’, Wolf Alice's off-kilter sound has seen folky vocals combine with the alt-rock of 90's bands like Hole and Elastica.

Re-formed in 1997, and still fronted by the inimitable Ian McCulloch, there's every cause to celebrate the Bunnymen's return. IDLES

IDLES appearing at this event

IDLES are a heavy post-punk band from Bristol. They want to entertain and hurt in equal measure. They believe that art and violence work. Their spirit colour is coral pink. One of them loves queuing, one struggles counting, one has been arrested 8 times, one doesn't like music and one puts sausage rolls on his pizza! 'IDLES are hard to capture, because they're not Fat White Family, they're not Sleaford Mods, they are very much their own incarnation of uncompromising rhythmical punk rock. Lyrically, a mixture of dry obsessional humour and poetic slogans. But, best of all, they really get the adrenaline pumping' - Steve Lamacq, BBC6 Music.

The Go! Team

The Go! Team appearing at this event

Playing a chaotic kaleidoscope of cut and paste sounds and old skool beats, The Go! Team have been building up legions of avid fans since the release of debut album Thunder Lightning Strike in 2004. Their piano-led tunes such as Feelgood By Numbers wouldn't sound out of place on a Charlie Brown TV cartoon, while Bottle Rocket is somewhat reminiscent of a track by 80s hip-hop stars The Rock Steady Crew. Now imagine the whole thing played on instruments taken from the school music cupboard and you'll start to see why The Go! Team might well be the most original band you'll see this year! Recommended.

Flamingods

Flamingods appearing at this event

A genre-defying tribal pop/experimental worldbeat outfit with roots in both England and Bahrain, Flamingods' dizzying blend of traditional African and Middle Eastern music, psych-folk, and prog falls somewhere in between the Avalanches, Konono Nº1, Animal Collective, and Goat. Formed in Bahrain in 2010 by Kamal Rasool, Sam Rowe, Charles Prest, Karthik Poduval, and Craig Doporto, the group issued a series of EPs before releasing its debut full-length album, Sun, in 2013 via English indie Art Is Hard. A change in UK visa laws resulted in Rasool being forced to move back to Bahrain shortly after graduating from university, so the quintet began working remotely, communicating their ideas via samples and snippets on the Internet. The results from those exchanges appeared on their 2014 sophomore outing, Hyperborea.

Your new favourite pop star Iris Gold certainly does, and she'd like to bring a large dollop of that spirit back via her insanely catchy blend of pop, late 80s hip- hop and, as she puts it, “new school sounds”. “I think my sound is just different,” she confirms through a giggle. “If you come to my shows you'll see I have a hype man who looks just like Biggie Smalls. We just rock it and jump around, getting everyone involved.”

Tarantino/Lynch style, Spaghetti Western inspired psych music that rocks hard and heavy. They are the leather jacket wearing, chain smoking, hard rocking siblings to bands like Starcrawler and Black Honey, seemingly raised on a diet of fuzz guitar riffs and hopeless tales of murder. A chemistry reminiscent of The Kills sets them apart with sparks flying between frontwoman Kitty Arabella Austen and co-lead Jon James Tufnell as they trade riffs and vocals with an intense fury highlighted by the raw, analogue production. "...pure cinematic Ennio Morricone rock n’roll" - The VPME.

Hattie Whitehead

Hattie Whitehead was born and raised in South West London constantly surrounded by music and words. She has been singing since she can remember, taping her first album at the tender age of 3, with her dad on guitar. The daughter of a jazz musician and a poet, she heard a lot of jazz and folk like James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman and this began to shape her taste in music. Some years later, Hattie completed a music degree at Leeds University, gigging alongside her studies, and soon after finishing she discovered a passion for writing her own songs. A year later, she brought her band together and began performing her new material around London, to a great response. Hattie’s love for different styles of music is reflected in her writing where there is a clear folk influence, but other genres are distinguishable, notably Indie and Alternative, with occasional jazz inflections in her vocal melodies.

The Japanese House appearing at this event

The Japanese House is the solo project of Londoner Amber Bain. Crafting a mix of lush dream pop and brooding electronica, the Buckinghamshire native worked under a handful of different monikers before using the Japanese House name in 2015. The name was inspired by a childhood trip to Devon, where she posed as a boy for a week, earning the affection of a neighborhood girl who was later heartbroken to learn Bain's true identity. 'The music is a dreamlike display of both careful restraint and free-flowing creativity. Bain experiments with seemingly incongruent tapestries of sound, the earthy and the metal, the muted pastels and radiant neons, the futuristic and the familiar, to create something that’s neither purely cerebral nor of the heart.'

Only Sun

Only Sun appearing at this event

Only Sun are an exciting indie rock band from High Wycombe comprising of five tiring personalities; Aabid, Daz, Ed, Euan & Taylor. Throughout 2017, they gigged extensively throughout the London scene including headlining The Old Blue Last and Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen. They've also played at nationally renowned festivals, including Kendal Calling, Camden Rocks and Liverpool Sound City, and gained support from Spotify's The Indie List, Made in Chelsea and BBC Introducing. Throughout 2018 they released a new single every month and with this volume of releases comes the freedom to plumb the depths of their imagination and satisfy the cravings of other styles while still maintaining their sound. Perhaps there is a darker side to indie pop? Maybe it could get cheesier. Perhaps culminate into a PR car crash? Or perhaps this is a stroke of genius. Staggering, five pints deep, down the thin line that lies between pure insanity and genius is something that is not new to each member of Only Sun. One thing is for sure; behind the self deprecating front and the quickly decomposing sense of humour, the boys are turning up the heat in the studio and are ready for another year of success.
