Cranleigh Folk Festival 2019 | Postponement

It is with regret that the organisers announce that the Cranleigh Folk Festival due to be held in Knowle Park from the 13th-15th September 2019 has been postponed.

The Folk Festival is designed to provide funds for the 1170 charity which supports the restoration work required for St Nicholas Church Cranleigh. The decision to postpone the event has been taken after careful consideration and is done to ensure the charity is not compromised financially.

The organisers believe that circumstances have conspired to create a significant financial risk that they are not willing to take. The event planning was severely delayed through the licencing process that included objections raised during this process and so extended the time frame by several months. For a first-time event this has proved to be a major handicap in marketing, engaging the festival audience and securing the requisite sponsorship.

Whilst broad support for the event in the village has been strong current uncertainty within the economy has put businesses under continued pressure. This is completely understandable as it seems that these conditions are also prevalent across the county. As a result of these conditions it has been difficult for the organisers to reach the desired sponsorship targets.

The organisers would like to thank all those who gave their time and commitment to the intended event. The organisers remain committed to meet their obligations in full. We look to reorganise and come back in the future.

Flats And Sharps

Flats And Sharps appearing at this event

In early 2011 four 17 year-old mates from college thought that maybe they could earn a bit of pocket money by forming a folk/bluegrass band and busking in and around Penzance. Four years later and now a five-piece, their incredible skill on their instruments, their luscious harmonies when grouped around a single microphone and their sheer joy at performing such infectious music has won over their audiences, building a reputation for themselves as the hottest band of their style in the UK.

The Salts

The Salts appearing at this event

The Salts are made up of seasoned musicians who play a mesmerising mix of full speed, foot-stomping traditional and original shanties. Doing for shanties what the Pogues did for folk, they create one of the most exciting and energetic folk concepts of recent times. Fronted by twice BBC Young Folk Finalist Lee Collinson, they fire a mighty yet respectful broadside at the traditional, with banjo, mandolin, guitars, double bass and percussion to the fore. The Salts album "She Rises" is available from Amazon and i-Tunes.

China Bears

China Bears were formed in Somerset in 2015 by twin brothers Ivan (guitar / vox) and Frazer (guitar). The line-up was completed after meeting bassist James and drummer Dean at university in Guildford later that year. Perhaps unsurprisingly drawing influence from bands such as The National, Dry The River, Frightened Rabbit and Snow Patrol, China Bears create misery-strewn indie anthems combining ambient guitars, choral vocals and raw lyric writing. The end result is a fantastically precise sound which takes the original emo loud / quiet template of, say, Death Cab For Cutie, but adds a stadium-sized sonic sucker punch.

Harry Miller

Drawing influences from Fink, John Martyn and Tracy Chapman, Harry’s songwriting is both complex yet fluid. You can expect a tasteful array of delicate guitar riffs, accompanied by soulful vocals with jazzy melody lines and stark, honest lyrics. Harry's songs drift through a spectrum of dark and cheery, but promise a constant flow of beautiful perspective into his vivid psyche. At the heart of it all, there lies fantastic song craft and pure feeling.
