Lowlands 2017

Passed

This event has been and gone.

For three days in August, a township with 55,000 inhabitants arises in the middle of thecountry. The Lowlands festival hosts no less than twelve stages in three large areas (among which a cinema and theatre), about 250 different acts and performances, dozens of restaurants from all corners of the earth, food and drink stalls, a large market with everything from clothes and CD stores to a barber’s shop, relax rooms with brain massages, sports facilities, a sauna / hottub area, its own currency, a local radio station, a daily newspaper (Dutch only) and, last but not least: seven luxury campsites with hot showers.

Though Lowlands covers a wide spectrum of different cultural activities, themain focus still is on alternative music: from rock to pop via hip hop; frommetal to electro via world music and hereby not neglecting drum ‘n bass andtechno.

Featuring

Mumford & Sons

Mumford & Sons appearing at this event

One of the most successful acts to come out of the first decade of the 21st century's English folk revival, London's Mumford & Sons' agreeable fusion of bluegrass, folk, country, and rock has found favour with audiences all around the world. Formed in 2007 by singer / guitarist / drummer Marcus Mumford, vocalist and banjo / Dobro player Winston Marshall, vocalist / keyboardist Ben Lovett, and vocalist / bassist Ted Dwane, the quartet bonded over their shared love of roots music - their moniker is meant to invoke the impression of an antiquated family business name. At that time the West London folk scene was becoming increasingly vibrant with the arrival of fellow new traditionalists like Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale and Johnny Flynn but Mumford & Sons have gone on to outsell and outshine them all with their success!

alt-j

alt-j appearing at this event

Leeds band alt-j were formerly known as Films, but changed their name to the symbol that you get from the Mac shortcut alt+j. The band comprise Joe Newman (guitar/vocals), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards) and Thom Green (drums). Their original and unique experimental indie/electronic sound saw their debut album, 'An Awesome Wave', achieve great critical acclaim which went on to win the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2012. They also won the Ivor Novello Album Award in 2013 and have received a string of nominations over the years from the Brits and Grammys. While critical success is always welcome, commercial success came with their 2nd album; 2014's 'This Is All Yours', which reached no.1 on the UK album chart, while 2017's 'Relaxer' reached no.3. They then enlisted an array of artists from the world of Hip Hop and Rap to remix and reinterpret the material from 'Relaxer' for 2018's 'Reduxer'.

The xx

The xx appearing at this event

2010 Mercury Prize winners The xx are a London trio known for their captivating stripped-down minimalist sound. It's often been said that "quiet is the new loud" and The xx are certainly among the best at creating gentle yet intense atmospheric mood music. Simplistic bass and keyboards at hush levels with vocals at almost a whisper, their delicate songs have led to comparisons with Young Marble Giants and early Cocteau Twins.

Editors

Editors appearing at this event

Marrying dark angular rock with a sharp pop sense, English band Editors emerged in the early 2000s as part of the post-punk revival that also included contemporaries Interpol, White Lies, and the Cinematics. Following their 2005 debut, The Back Room, they scored a pair of U.K. chart-toppers, including In This Light and on This Evening, which found the band incorporating more synth pop elements. They furthered that digital push on 2015's In Dream, before striking a balance between rock and electronic with 2018's Violence.
