Lohengrin: Welsh National Opera
A sumptuous romantic opera on a grand scale.
A shadow has been cast upon the broken land of Brabant, but little do its people realise, greater forces are at work. Elsa, the daughter of the late ruler, stands accused of the murder of her missing brother. Elsa is awe-struck when the knight she has dreamed of arrives on a boat led by a swan to defend her honour. In return for his help she must marry this stranger and on no account must she ask his name. The heavens finally seem to smile upon Elsa. However, forces of evil conspire to throw her mind into doubt, jeopardising her happiness and her own life.
Wagner’s Lohengrin is a sumptuous romantic opera on a grand scale. Lothar Koenigs and the Chorus and Orchestra of Welsh National Opera have an international reputation as accomplished interpreters of Wagner’s operas. An exciting cast of singing actors has been assembled for this new production which promises to be a major event in the bicentenary year of the composer’s birth.
Sung in German with surtitles in English and Welsh.
Founded in Cardiff in 1943, WNO exists to produce, perform and tour thrilling and entertaining world-class opera. The Company has always provided a mix of traditional and less-well-known operas, including those of Alban Berg, Richard Strauss, Leoš Janá?ek and Benjamin Britten.
The opera company consists of a professional orchestra (The Orchestra of Welsh National Opera) and a professional choir (The Chorus of Welsh National Opera. The orchestra and the choir often perform at St David's Hall in Cardiff and at other venues throughout Wales.
