We Will Remember Them
In 1940, the Germans succeeded in destroying the Spitfire factories in Southampton but unknown to them, the British decided to build Spitfires in secret. Salisbury became a major centre for manufacturing Spitfires, hidden in sheds, garages, back gardens, a bus depot and a hotel. With a workforce mainly made up of unskilled young girls, boys, women and a handful of engineers, 2000 Spitfires were built, thus, becoming instrumental in winning the war.
The secret was so well kept that even today not many people know about it so, we believe it is time to shine a light on this little known fact and celebrate the achievements of our young men and women who worked so tirelessly for the peace that we enjoy today.
The annual Royal British Legion concert, “We Will Remember Them” will pay homage to them and the survivors of our local workforce.
In aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
