Carducci Quartet
Huw Watkins piano

Huw Watkins’ involvement in this year’s Festival as a featured composer reaches its zenith in this concert, when you can hear him play his own music for piano.

He is joined by contemporary music specialists Carducci Quartet for a performance of his Piano Quintet (2018).

This lively piece couldn’t contrast more sharply with The Wind in High Places, from this year’s other featured composer, John Luther Adams. Inspired by the Alaskan mountains, it’s a sparse, hypnotic string quartet, which regular Festival collaborator, composer Pwyll ap Siôn, has described as “breathtaking”.

And if you saw our outdoor performances in 2019 with Astrid the Street Organ, you’ll have come across David Roche, who coordinated the project and introduced the compositions. This time we’ve commissioned David to write a new piece for solo piano, which Huw Watkins will perform in its world premiere in this concert.

Carducci String Quartet

Based in the UK, the Carducci Quartet is recognised as one of today's most successful string quartets, performing over 90 concerts worldwide each year whilst running their own annual festival in Highnam, Gloucestershire and recording label Carducci Classics, as well as holding residencies at Trinity Laban, Cardiff University and Dean Close School, Cheltenham. The Carducci String Quartet are Matthew Denton and Michelle Fleming (violins), Eoin Schmidt-Martin (viola) and Emma Denton (cello). '... playing of constant variety, a masterclass in unanimity of musical purpose' (The Strad) '... high-octane playing balanced control with devil-may-care spontaneity...' (The Guardian) '... the Carducci String Quartet were stunning... they are clearly musicians of high intelligence...' (The Times).
