Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall are delighted to welcome the acclaimed Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt to the Royal Concert Hall for her first Nottingham Classics appearance, performing with the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra.

Described by The New York Times as having “an instant link from head and heart to fingertips”, Angela is in demand both as a recital performer and as a soloist with the world’s greatest orchestras, and her Bach performances have established her as one of the composer’s foremost interpreters of our time.

For this concert she’ll be performing Beethoven’s most poetic concerto, whose softly-spoken opening is a world away from its near contemporary, the Fifth Symphony. In its richly contrasting expression and agile changes of pace it’s no less revolutionary, redefining what a Romantic concerto could be.

A visit to Italy gave Sibelius the inspiration for his Second Symphony, envisaged as a tone poem on the life of Don Juan. Ironically it became an emblem of Finnish nationalism – a vision of his homeland that’s expansive and determined, with a radiantly uplifting finale.
