Freedom Sounds - The Story Of Studio One
The importance of Studio One Records to Jamaican and contemporary music as a whole cannot be over stated. Their output covered everything from reggae through ska and rocksteady, to dub and dancehall. A true musical institution labeled The Motown of Jamaica, they represented and recorded music from Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, through to The Skatalites and Bob Marley.
In a musical culture in which championed diversity and ‘versioning’, the weekly open audition ran for the record label’s duration, and can largely be thanked for much of the music having left Jamaica’s shores. We pay homage to the driving force behind this unique sound.
