The Coronation of Poppea
Love triumphs over virtue – but will it last?
Claudio Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea was first performed at the 1643 Venice carnival. This ground-breaking opera, full of scheming and perfidy, tells how Nero’s mistress Poppea out-manouvers his wife to become crowned empress of Rome.
The opera stars of the future are conducted by Jane Glover, one of the world's greatest experts in this music. This new production is directed by John Ramster. Sung in Italian with surtitles.
