Barbican Presents - Handel's Theodora: The English Concert, Choir of Trinity Church Wall Street
For his penultimate and arguably his finest oratorio, Handel found a story from an unlikely source – a tale of martyrdom recounted by a scientist known for his Law of Thermodynamics rather than his literary skill.
But the painful wisdom of Robert Boyle's Theodora, who refused to renounce her beliefs and was executed with the soldier who betrayed his officers to protect her, drew from Handel some of the most heart-stopping music he would write.
Stamped through Handel's score is both the inspiring hope of love and the searing pain of injustice; music that is as much human as it is divine.
Soloists: Rosemary Joshua (soprano), Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano), Tim Mead (countertenor), Andrew Kennedy (tenor) and Neal Davies (bass).
This event takes place at Barbican Centre, which has achieved Silver Status for disabled access from Attitude Is Everything.
Europe's leading Baroque orchestra, under the direction of conductor Harry Bicket, The English Concert has an unsurpassed reputation for inspiring performances of Baroque and Classical music and ranks among the finest chamber orchestras in the world.
'Bicket unwrapped a musical surprise, too, in the shape of a concerto for four violins by the mysterious Dutch diplomat-composer Unico Willem van Wassenaer, some of whose work was for many years attributed to Pergolesi, no less. The playing, with Matthew Truscott's violin always eloquently at the forefront, was ravishingly good' (The Guardian)
'The English Concert, the acclaimed period instrument ensemble, with Harry Bicket conducting, presented an elegant, dramatically riveting concert performance at Carnegie Hall, with a splendid cast headed by the superb mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in the title role' (New York Times)
