Still only in their mid-twenties Roller Trio shot to fame in 2012, propelled out of Leeds by a series of raucous, high octane gigs, including a swaggering set for BBC Introducing in Manchester, that had the critics raving about their visceral stew of thrashy riffs, tricksy time signatures and rollicking melodies.

They rounded off a madcap year with a Mercury Prize nomination as a 2012 Album of the Year and subsequent MOBO nomination for best jazz act. Since then they have played at festivals and clubs all over Europe, broadcast two live shows on BBC Radio 3 and sold out their last three London shows.

Roller Trio released their second album Fracture in Dec 2014, going down a storm with reviewers, fans and other bands. One of these bands was the internationally acclaimed art-rock band Django Django who invited saxophonist James Mainwaring to play on their new album and Roller Trio to support them on their UK tour in May.

“Dark, menacing, bass heavy - the new sound of UK jazzzzzzz!” Gilles Peterson BBC 6 Music

“Each piece evolves intriguingly – raw noises swap with cool melodies; glowering, Spanish-sounding pieces unleash tenor-sax whirls; blurting stop-start motifs ease in and out of swing grooves.” John Fordham The Guardian

“Epic rock-edge riffs, angular sax explorations, brooding beats and haunting dub-step style electronics..” Jazzwise

"A second album that’s different and diverse, and on a live show it must be a gas." John Fordham, the Guardian ***

"They’re in-your-face, seething with energy, and they thrive as much in rock venues as in traditional jazz venues." Ivan Hewitt, The Telegraph **** (Live Review)

"Roller Trio at their best, experimental yet accessible, powerful but intelligent… the best place to hear this band is at a gig. They’re a fantastically exciting live act who play with swagger and conviction and always come up with the goods. Perhaps they should consider a live recording when the time for the third album comes around" Ian Mann, the Jazz Mann ****

"Roller Trio first burst forth with their eponymous 2012 Mercury-nominated album, which for some would prove a tough act to follow, but their new record Fracture is even better. Undaunted by complexity and dissonance, but at the same time not afraid to write a beautiful melody, Roller Trio make the case for challenging, relevant jazz which, more than anything, is hugely enjoyable." Jonathan Carvell, London Jazz News

"Just three words will do – stonking unforgettable tunes… the long-awaited second album, Fracture, from Mercury Prize and MOBO nominated Roller Trio was worth the wait and the band can be rightly very proud of it." Mary James, Only Jazz Blog *****

"This ability to blend the accessible and the serious, the melodic and the experimental is a real gift that Roller Trio have down" Phil Barnes, All About Jazz Review ****
