''The halcyon days of the construction yard at Nigg Bay; known as 'Highlands Fabricators', are perhaps best remembered between the early 1970's and the late 1980's when the yard had a healthy order book and employed, quite literally, thousands of men and women. Traveling men, engineers, support staff and technicians/draftsmen made the place 'tick!'

George Emney arrived at the yard one bitterly cold February morning and having travelled up on the Inverness sleeper from London and with the instruction to report to the engineering manager of the day. Emney's 'reputation' preceded him and a very wily manager told him that, in no uncertain terms, he would do 'exactly as he was told!'

To say that he had a great time is perhaps understating things a little working alongside folk from Glasgow,Inverness; the Black Isle, Ross-shire and further afield, he would witness enviable feats of engineering that harkened back to times past and the great Victorian Engineers!

Envy and the desire to be a 'good engineer' were in conflict with a 'hidden desire' to sing and in 1982 Emney said 'goodbye' to many friends round about and set off south to train as an opera singer in Milan-it didn't quite work out like that!
