From the indigenous and folk music of Mexico with Carlos Chávez’s Sinfonía India to the heady heights of New York with Copland’s dazzling final symphony, this is a revealing programme of music tearing down walls and transcending borders. Nestled in between is pianist Xiayin Wang as the soloist for Gershwin’s breezy Piano Concerto, a masterful fusion of ‘classical’ or ‘jazz’ by a composer who refused to separate music into boxes.
