Haydn: The Creation: City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), CBSO Chorus, Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, Matthew Brook, Lydia Teuscher, Thomas Hobbs
“When I think of God, I can write only cheerful music” said Joseph Haydn, and his great oratorio The Creation finds room for both angels and earthworms. But Haydn’s vision of a universe emerging from chaos also inspired music of cosmic grandeur, and with Mirga Gražinyt?-Tyla conducting the CBSO Chorus and a world-class team of soloists, there’s no more life-affirming way to open our new season.
There will be a 20-minute interval.
Founded in 1920, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has always had an illustrious career. In fact, the first concert was conducted by Sir Edward Elgar. The orchestra has grown into a 90-piece ensemble with a worldwide reputation.

The CBSO Chorus is one of the world’s great choirs – 180 people from all walks of life who come together to sing symphonic choral music. Trained for over 30 years by Simon Halsey CBE, its main role is to perform with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on tour and at its home, Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. But it’s also an ensemble with a global reputation in its own right, a hard-working team of “amateur professionals” who give up their own time to perform the most challenging works in the choral repertoire to the highest international standard.
