Bexhill Choral Society is bringing Handel’s Messiah, the best loved and most exciting of all oratorios.

Amazingly, Messiah was written in just 24 days in 1741, and it saved Handel’s career. His operas had failed to appeal to the taste of London audiences, so he reinvented himself by composing oratorios. Beginning with the joyous news of Christ’s Birth, Messiah superbly encompasses the grief of his Passion, the triumph of his Resurrection – culminating in the famous Hallelujah Chorus – and his Christian world legacy as the Saviour of Mankind.

Through its quasi-operatic drama of recitatives, arias and choruses, Messiah constantly shows Handel’s brilliant ability to express religious sentiments in the most memorable music.
