Dream Sequence
On the 7th of October 1774, a pioneering illusionist named Johann Georg Schröpfer made a final announcement to his patrons. He had been so persuaded by the images of ghosts he had conjured in his shows, he announced that to prove their authenticity his next resurrection would be his most impressive yet. That evening, he walked alone into a field and shot himself.
Schröpfer's magic lantern shows would go on to inspire the birth of cinema as we know it. But how much do we know about the relationship between an audience and a flickering image? What exists in the space between? Dream Sequence fuses storytelling, video installation and performance art, and draws on research with film editors and neurologists. It explores why we tell stories, and how they come to be.
