Putting On The Glitz - 1930s Evening Wear

Dazzling 1930s evening gowns take centre stage in the 'Putting on the Glitz' exhibition, revealing how the glitz and glamour of Hollywood was reflected in the fashions of the period.

Featuring 20 outfits from National Museums Liverpool’s fashion collection, the exhibition shows how, in contrast to the previous decade, women embraced more fitted styles with longer hemlines.

Highlights include an evening dress that belonged to the daughter of the Chief Officer on the Titanic and a pearl and diamanté encrusted silk wedding dress.

As well as dresses, a selection of shoes, stoles, handbags and hats feature in the exhibition, some of which belonged to renowned shopper Mrs Emily Tinne.

The exhibition also includes a set of striking 1930s fashion illustrations, which were designed for George Henry Lee & Co. by local illustrator Miss Winifred Aileen Brown.

The outfits on display are representative of a period of rising social aspirations. Much as we do today, people chose to demonstrate their affluence and taste through their choice of clothing.
