A Comedy Double-Bill
Alan Bennett’s award-winning comedy double-bill, An Englishman Abroad and A Question of Attribution, explores our fascination with Russian spies and the Royal Family, depicting the lives of two members of the notorious ‘Cambridge Five’ spy ring – Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt – who operated at the heart of the British Establishment in the 1940s and 1950s.
Spanning the globe from Moscow to London, Single Spies gives a glimpse into lives lived under cover of forgery and fraud, exile and espionage, and paints a portrait of what it might be like to be interrogated by Her Majesty The Queen.
An Englishman Abroad is the true story of actress Coral Browne’s chance encounter with Guy Burgess, exiled in Moscow and missing England. Invited to dine at his flat, she receives just one simple instruction – “bring a tape measure”.
A Question of Attribution follows Anthony Blunt, esteemed art historian and Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures, as he tries to solve the riddle of an enigmatic painting, while himself being the subject of investigation by MI5. An accidental audience with The Queen induces a sharp and dangerous exchange of wits.
Alan Bennett’s classic comedy masterpieces are being staged by Wimborne Drama Productions by special arrangement with Samuel French, LTD., and are directed by Sam Moulton.
