The Glass Menagerie

A taut, family drama from the pen of playwright Tennessee Williams.

Tom Wingfield is the narrator who looks back at his life with his mother Amanda, a faded Southern belle who has struggled to raise him and his sister, Laura, against a background of the financial difficulty after their dashing father abandoned them some 16 years before.

Yearning for the glory days of her youth, Amanda almost resents her children for the sacrifices she has made for them, but there is one more pressing thing on her mind - a suitor for Laura. The problem is that Laura has a limp - the result of the serious childhood illness - and is terribly shy and retiring, preferring to spend most of her time with her collection of little glass animals. When reintroduced one evening to Jim O'Connor, an old mutual High School friend and current workmate of Tom's, it is hoped the two of them will hit it off.

As the evening does not go quite according to plan it also becomes clear that the passage of time has not been kind to Jim. Meanwhile Tom, an aspiring but frustrated poet dissatisfied with his life supporting his family by working in a shoe warehouse, harbours secrets and has put a plan in place to escape his family.
