Biber's Missa Salisburgensis a 53
Written on enormous sheets of paper which make Tallis’s 40-parts Spem in alium seem rather small by comparison, Biber’s Salzburg Mass is the largest surviving composition of sacred baroque music.
The manuscript was first found in the home of a greengrocer in the 1870s in Salzburg and was originally thought to have been composed by Benevoli. In the mid-1970s the musicologist Hintermaier proved that the Missa had been written by Heinrich Biber, most probably in 1682 for the celebrations marking the 1100th anniversary of the archdiocese of Salzburg.
