Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake Suite
Weber: Bassoon Concerto
Schumann: Symphony No 3 (Rhenish)
Soloist: Amy Harman (Bassoon)
Conductor: Barry Wordsworth
Our November concert includes a concerto for bassoon – an instrument rarely featured as a solo instrument, but Weber’s virtuosic Bassoon Concerto dramatically and effectively exploits all its capabilities.
We start with a suite of music from Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular ballet Swan Lake, full of memorable melodies, and our concert ends with Schumann’s mighty five-movement Third Symphony. This was the last that he wrote and it is known as the ‘Rhenish’ symphony as it was inspired by a happy trip he and his wife took to the Rhineland.
Amy Harman (Bassoon)
A passionate advocate for the bassoon, Amy is much sought after as a soloist, chamber musician, teacher and communicator, regularly featuring on BBC Radio 3. She has taken part in festivals across Europe including Parnu, Tbilisi and West Cork. In 2019 she returns to the Wigmore Hall with Dame Sarah Connolly and Nicholas Daniel, and makes her USA debut at the Spoleto Festival with the St. Lawrence Quartet.
Born in London, Amy Harman studied at the Royal College of Music with Andrea de Flammineis, Julie Price and Martin Gatt, and with František Herman at the Hudební Fakulta Akademie Múzických Umění in Prague. Between 2010-2011 she was Principal Bassoon of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. She was selected by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2014.
Amy is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music.
