Gilbert & Sullivan's "Patience"
"Patience, or Bunthorne's bride" first seen in London in 1881, satirized the contemporary aesthetic craze led by Oscar Wilde and his literary circle. The lovesick maidens have thrown over their upright military fiancés in favour of the unheeding poet Bunthorne; they follow him around, much to his annoyance, totally ignoring the dragoons. Sensible Patience herself cannot understand this, love is a closed book to her - until she meets her very own poet. Meanwhile, the soldiers attempt to become aesthetic themselves, since that is what the girls obviously go for, but with mixed results. Needless to say, all ends happily, but you'll have to come along to find out who in the end is Bunthorne's bride!
Director Sue Richards has updated the production from the poetic 1880s to the hippie 1960s, and there are a lot of parallels.
