The Musical World of the 17th & 18th Century
Ashley Solomon: Director
Elin Manahan Thomas: Soprano
Father, Son and Godfather
Telemann: Suite in A minor for recorder and strings
JS Bach: Cantata BWV82a Ich habe genug
CPE Bach: Symphony in A major
JS Bach: Cantata BWV209 Non sa che sia dolore
Despite earning three times his salary, JS Bach didn’t hold it against his friend Telemann who he invited to be Godfather to son Carl Philipp Emanuel. In their day, both Telemann and Bach junior eclipsed Johann in terms of fame and reputation and this concert by early music specialists Florilegium vividly displays the brilliance of their writing. However the essential humanity of Bach senior’s genius is never in doubt. It imbues the two cantatas performed with Elin Manahan Thomas – works that move from mellow melancholy to optimistic joy.
