The most admired British conductor of his generation, Edward Gardiner, takes us to sea with Felix Mendelssohn, and joins the masterly Lars Vogt in Mozart’s jewel of a piano concerto. The nature-loving Sibelius wrote that he liked to compare the symphony to a river and there is a river-like flow to his Fifth Symphony. It opens with rivulets of a glowing sunrise and ends in full flow – his memory of a flight of swans, depicted by one of the simplest but noblest melodies ever written.
