About the show
Evelyn Glennie & Jon Sterckx Duo:
Evelyn Glennie and Jon Sterckx bring together two remarkable musical worlds: the physical presence of acoustic percussion and the limitless possibilities of electronics. Their performances inhabit the space between the two, where a single struck sound can resonate, fracture, loop or transform into something entirely unexpected.
Alongside acoustic and electronic sound, they draw on varied musical backgrounds and influences, bringing together elements from different musical worlds and traditions, and reimagining existing repertoire through their distinctive shared language. Rhythms emerge, dissolve and reappear; textures shift from intimate and almost imperceptible to visceral and immersive. Their shared curiosity makes each performance feel alive and open-ended, balancing precision with spontaneity, acoustic immediacy with electronic imagination, and the familiar with the unexpected.
At the heart of this collaboration is a spirit of exploration and inclusion: performances are shaped to invite audiences in, whatever their musical background or level of familiarity, encouraging everyone to listen, discover and experience sound in their own way.
This is a meeting of sound worlds that invites audiences to hear familiar instruments differently and to experience just how expansive, evocative and inclusive live music can be.

Featuring - Jon Sterckx
A versatile and innovative percussionist, Jon has worked across a wide range of musical styles, from traditional musical forms to contemporary experimental styles, theatre and dance collaborations, live percussion sampling (live looping) and fusion collaborations.
Performances include: 2 performances at TED events, WOMAD, Cadogan Hall, London International Arts Festival, Llangollen International Eisteddfod, 3 Choirs Festival, Beautiful Days Festival, Larmer Tree Festival, Musicport, Drum Camp, Tribe of Doris, Kaya Festival, Cardiff Mela, Glasgow Mela, Belfast Mela.
“Few percussionists, no matter how skilled, can captivate and keep an eager festival audience with a solo performance but Jon Sterckx’s stunning Drumscapes are a masterclass in control and rhythm that hook the audiences from the first beats and carry them through to an invariably ecstatic climax.
Centred on the tabla, darabuka and riq (a Middle Eastern tambourine) Jon combines beats and rhythms from across the globe with cutting edge sampling and innovative vocal sculpting, building layered soundscapes that mix the experimental with the traditional and creating a uniquely intoxicating, exhilarating and, many say, trance inducing performance quite unlike any other.” Musicport Festival 2015.
Jon is also an experienced educator and teaches tabla & percussion, runs weekly tabla classes in Swindon & delivers workshops to schools & colleges and for educational organisations.
