Journeys To Enlightenment series
Beethoven and Shostakovich
Three concerts exploring Beethoven's ground-breaking set of Quartets op. 18 and the more private emotions of Shostakovich
In Beethoven's late twenties, France overthrew its monarchy and a wave of rebellion spread through Europe. The composer was presented with the opportunity to not only to change music but the social standing of "the artist". He did both; from the early 1800s music would never be th same again.
Shostakovich's Quartets document the stresses of life under the Soviet regime. These quartets take you on a journey through oppression and his hope of an enlightened era.
The Quartet's "Shostakovich 15" project in the 40th year since his death sees them present the complete catalogue across a number of cycles and special projects in the UK, South America and the USA as well as recording several for Signora Classics.
