Bach’s Oboe Sonata contrasts bright and lively sections with serene, flowing lines. Although the piece is credited to Johann Sebastian Bach, some scholars believe it was written by his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel.
Haydn’s Trio was written when the flute was becoming popular in England. Also subtitled London, his Symphony No.104 is considered to be the crowning glory of his symphonic works.
Grave was written by Lutoslawski as a memorial for Polish musicologist Stefan Jarocinski, and opens with a quotation from Debussy’s opera Pelléas et Mélisande, on which Jarocinski was an expert. Grave features an intense dialogue between cello and piano, moving on to rhythmically vigorous sections and virtuosic lines before its spectral conclusion
