Pater Noster

The programme, entitled 'Pater Noster', is based around the words of the Lord’s Prayer, featuring musical settings of the prayer alongside other works that complement the meaning of the different sentences.

The first presentation of the Lord’s Prayer featured on the evening uses plainchant, the most ancient musical form. Different styles of plainchant developed alongside each other in the early years of Medieval times until the 12th Century when the styles were standardised into the Gregorian form that is widely used to this day.

Other settings of the Lord’s Prayer include ones by Heinrich Schütz, Maurice Duruflé, Igor Stravinsky, Sir John Tavener and Leonard Bernstein. Other works featured in this atmospheric programme include music by Orlando Lassus, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Henry Purcell, Orlando Gibbons and former King’s Singer Bob Chilcott.

The second half of the programme will contain a collection of pieces from the lighter end of the repertoire, songs in close harmony, which can include arrangements of folk songs and spirituals, standard evergreens and contemporary pop material.
