Following her memorable sell-out Music in the Round concert last Autumn with the Chiaroscuro Quartet, we are delighted to welcome violinist Alina Ibragimova back to Sheffield for a recital that presents transfixing and ecstatic music written for a single performer.

The Belgian violin virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe, who performed the Beethoven Violin Concerto under the baton of Sir Henry Wood in Sheffield in 1902, sketched out his 6 sonatas in a mere 24 hours following a realisation that nobody in nearly 200 years had attempted to follow Bach’s example of writing for unaccompanied violin. Ysaÿe was not presuming to try to surpass or even match Bach, but he did consider that with the evolution of music and technique he might say something new in this rare genre.

The juxtaposition of Bach and Ysaÿe’s profound music promises an evening of immense expressivity and radiance.

“Alina Ibragimova is a superb advocate [for Ysaÿe’s Sonatas]; her performances brim with lyricism and wit.” The Guardian
