The Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus are sure to be in great voice tonight for this fascinating programme of English and American works.
First, James Burton conducts Bax’s Tintagel, one of the most evocative musical seascapes ever written and a piece that also reflected its composer’s illicit love for the pianist Harriet Cohen. Elgar’s 1917 work The Spirit of England sets the words of war poet Laurence Binyon, here conveyed by the superb soprano, Elizabeth Atherton.
Though patriotic, it is never jingoistic and captures the desolation of war without ever becoming maudlin. Barber described his Knoxville, Summer of 1915 as a “lyric rhapsody”. It nostalgically evokes more innocent times. A setting of poetry by Walt Whitman, Vaughan William’s Toward the Unknown Region perfectly captures that author’s ardent liberal idealism.
