Liszt - Piano Concerto No. 2
Beethoven - Symphony No. 6 ‘Pastoral’
Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé open the new season with Dvo?ák’s The Golden Spinning Wheel, a work that displays its composer’s vivid imagination and gift for orchestral narrative and one based on a macabre Czech folk ballad. Benjamin Grosvenor is one of the finest young pianists in the world and tonight he performs Liszt’s stunning Second Concerto.
As well as being a brilliant virtuoso showpiece, the work will also highlight the poetic qualities of his playing. 'No one can love the countryside as much as I do', wrote Beethoven, and this love was eloquently expressed in his timeless ‘Pastoral’ symphony. With its evocative depictions of nature and of man within it, it never fails to delight and inspire.
