Tales of Whatever are delighted to welcome Andy Barr performing one of our favourite shows from Edinburgh 2019. In fact, we liked the show so much that we're suspending our usual true storytelling vibe to bring you this wonderful slice of madness. Then we're immediately reinstating it for Tom Mayhew's brilliant critically acclaimed 2019 hour I, Tom Mayhew.
Andy Barr - The Ruby
With his father recently deceased, minor aristocrat Andy Barr stands to inherit his fortune, his estate, his magnificent ruby and its terrible curse.
Andy Barr is an award-winning comic, an 'alt-comedy favourite' (Time Out) and an 'off-key delight' (Skinny) whose 'comic timing and gestures are impeccable' (★★★★ (List)), Tim Key's Pick of the Fringe (iNews, 2017), not to mention 'a charming late-night curiosity' (Chortle.co.uk).
Tom Mayhew - I, Tom Mayhew
This is a story of rejections, the Job Centre, being working class, and fighting for your place in the world. With lots of jokes. It explores the reality of growing up poor, being long-term unemployed, and being someone in their 20s in austerity Britain.
Tom has written for The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4) and NewsJack (BBC Radio 4 Extra), but still lives with his parents. This is a unique story that is personal and political, and very, very funny.
‘Quite simply an absolute gem of a performance .’ ★★★★★ EDIT
'His jokes are punchy, sharp and forthcoming. Despite the often weighty subject matter, laughs are never too far apart.’ ★★★★ The Skinny
Doors 7pm. Tickets £8 adv or £10 on the door

Tom Mayhew is a stand-up comedian, writer, podcaster and actor. He covers many topics in his stand-up, including being working-class, politics, and mental health. He likes to write stand-up that is a mix of the brutally honest and the ridiculous. Tom won The Comedy Store's King Gong in 2016, was nominated for the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2017, and reached the BBC New Comedy Award Semi-Finals in 2018, which was recorded live at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra. He has performed comedy for BBC Radio 1, and written for The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4) and Newsjack (BBC Radio 4 Extra). Tom also presents the 'The 18 Percent Podcast', which was launched in November 2018. Inspired by a 2018 study which found that only 18% of those in the performing arts are working-class, it explores the relationship between class and art, and sees him interviewing a wide range of working class artists and industry creatives. "It's a fascinating brain he's got in there, with as much of this distinctive hour spent trying to solve the riddle of Mayhew as it is him making you laugh." - Chortle "Tom Mayhew’s charmingly awkward persona hides a fantastic alternative comic mind. His jokes are sharp, never predictable and consistently land." - Broadway Baby "His content is from the heart....spellbinding, raw and telling. He is a genuine joy to watch." - Kate Copstick
