A Cultural Legacy - Remembering Frank Constantine

Frank Constantine was Director of Sheffield City Art Galleries from1964–1982. Over this influential period Frank made a huge contribution to the cultural life of the city, acquiring over 500 artworks for Sheffield’s collection, overseeing an innovative exhibition series, and creating an educational programme which was ahead of its time.

Building on the tradition of art collecting in the city established by previous figures such as J.N. Mappin and J.G. Graves, Constantine succeeded in bringing world-class artworks to the city’s collection.

In memory of Frank, who died last year aged 95, this exhibition celebrates his inspirational and hugely varied collecting. Through clever negotiation, personal relationships, and an eye for the often overlooked artwork, Constantine earned Sheffield’s collection a national reputation in the world of art.
