Howard Barker Double Bill: Slowly & All This Joseph
Described by playwright Sarah Kane as ‘the Shakespeare of our age’ and by The Times as ‘England’s greatest living dramatist’, Howard Barker is the author of over 100 plays, as well as several volumes of poetry and essays about theatre, while his paintings are held in national collections and exhibited internationally.
Slowly – Four princesses debate their possible fate and actions as invading barbarians approach the palace. As their culture dies, decorum demands suicide; but, for some, the possibility of life remains attractive.
All This Joseph – the premier of one of Barker’s most recent and unpublished plays. It is a re-imagining and re-writing of the Biblical story in which the wife of Potiphar attempts to seduce his slave, and then accuses him of attempted rape. Like much of Barker’s recent writing, the play focuses on themes of sexual desire, sacrifice, transgression and death.
