Songs And Stories Of The Great War
For the centenary of the First World War, electro-folk-storytelling trio Harp And A Monkey have a new show. This is an exciting performance that includes original songs and re-workings of traditional songs with poignant, tragic and humorous anecdotes of a bona-fide expert: singer Martin Purdy is a published WW1 historian.
The show concentrates on the 90% who came home, so features some of the dark humour of the trenches - as well as recording of the voices of the men themselves. It also explains the history of the songs based on real stories - and an explanation of the nature of the 'musical hall' songs of the period, songs for those left behind which were not songs of the men themselves.
The show is illustrated by photographic projections and recorded voices of the men themselves.
Pre-show talk at 7pm. Q&A with Martin Purdy - singer, raconteur and WWI historian (author of Doing Our Bit and The Gallipoli Oak).
