From The Heart
Richard Quick - Violin.
Elgar - Violin Concerto Op.61.
Mussorgsky - Intermezzo in Modo Classico.
Tchaikovsky - The Tempest, Symphonic Fantasia.
The main theme of tonight’s concert focuses on love and all of its myriad facets. Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest contains one of his greatest love themes, which even rivals that of Romeo and Juliet. Based on Shakespeare’s play, the work depicts the stillness of the ship at sea, the grotesque nature of Caliban, and the love between Ferdinand and Miranda.
Richard Quick, former leader of the orchestra, will perform Elgar’s Violin Concerto in B minor. The work is hailed as one of the true greats of the oeuvre. Deeply autobiographical, the concerto bears a second dedication, Herein is enshrined the soul of, This is a likely reference to Mrs Alice Stuart Wortley, a close friend of Elgar.
Also performing Mussorgsky’s striking musical image of a group of peasants trudging through the snow, Intermezzo in Modo Classico.
