For The Love Of Music
Programme:
Copland - Old American Songs
Chaminade - Concertino
Brahms - Symphony No.2
Tonight they welcome the Scarborough Choral Society. They will join to perform Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs, based on folk songs and hymns from the 18th & 19th centuries. Originally for voice and piano, Copland adapted them for voice and orchestra and, due to their popularity, for choir as well. Famous songs, such as Simple Gifts (used in Appalachian Spring) and At the River are sure to leave you all beaming.
They are excited to welcome Della Blood to perform Cecile Chaminade’s Concertino for flute and orchestra. The concertino is a hugely popular work amongst flautists and was performed regularly by James Galway!
They close with Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No.2 in D major. The world première took place in Vienna conducted by Hans Richter in 1877 and was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic. The work was an instant success and has musicians and audience members cherishing the abundant melodies.
