The first performance of Malcolm Archer’s ‘Vespers’ is being given as part of an exciting programme of 20th and 21st century music, entitled ‘Tender Is The Night’ by The Farrant Singers, conducted by Andrew Mackay.
The work is beautiful settings of poems and prayers relating to the evening from such writers as Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis and and W.B Yeats as well as a Collect from the service of Evensong and, unusually, a Ghanaian fisherman’s prayer.
The programme also includes ‘Into Thy Hands’ by Jonathan Dove which was commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury Cathedral and given its first performance by Salisbury Cathedral Choir in 1996 and Philip Moore’s moving setting of ‘Three Prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’ - Morning Prayers, Prayers in Time of Distress and Evening Prayers.
Completing the programme is Benjamin Britten’s ‘Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings’ for which the Farrant Singers are joined by Guy Cutting, tenor, Andrew Littlemore, horn and the Farrant Orchestra.
