Nicholas Pope: The Apostles Speaking In Tongues
Nicholas Pope's 'The Apostles Speaking in Tongues Lit by Their Own Lamps' has been installed in Salisbury Cathedral to coincide with Pentecost.
First shown at Tate Britain in 1996-97, a grouping of terracotta figures
represent the twelve apostles surrounded by an enthralled ‘multitude’
:a gathering of elongated vessel - like forms sprouting amorphous limbs or growths, clumsy and ethereal, alien and human, pagan and Christian.
The lamps will be lit at 7am, 11am and 3pm Monday to Saturday and Noon-3pm on Sundays.
