Sophia's Ashes
Set in 1967 on the eve of the decriminalisation of “homosexual acts”, Sophia’s Ashes tells the story of Nancy and Stephen, a lesbian and a gay man who are living together in suburban Litchfield in a marriage of convenience. Nancy’s long-term lover, Sophia, a married woman with children, has just died of cancer. The play chronicles the events leading up to and just after Sophia’s death. Setting the unconventional against the ordinary, the dark comedy seeks to explore the complex nature of love, jealousy and sexual prejudice in a time when the distinction between the public and the private was virtually non-existent.
