After his rapturously well-received recital at Saffron Hall last year (four encores), the superstar violinist and showman Maxim Vengerov returns for another brilliantly varied recital designed to give full rein to both his dazzling technique and his staggering breadth of emotion. With pianist Roustem Saitkoulov, he performs several twentieth-century masterpieces, including Ravel’s jazz-inspired Sonata No 2, Ysaÿe’s Sonata No 6, based on the seductive rhythms of the habanera, and Shostakovich’s large-scale Sonata in G which ranges in tone from scabrous rage to eerie stillness. The concert also features several nineteenth-century showstoppers – including works by Paganini, and Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst’s polyphonic solo arrangement of the popular Irish folksong The Last Rose of Summer – which allow the violinist to demonstrate his breathtaking dexterity to the full.
