Saffron Hall’s brand new Resident Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia is joined by The Sixteen to open their 2016-17 season.
A typically illuminating programme from Britten Sinfonia places a new work by James MacMillan in context with music from Tallis to Vaughan Williams.
For James MacMillan, ’beauty is at the heart of our Christian faith’ and his new Stabat Mater is sure to be profoundly shaped by his beliefs. But this is a work with deep roots and a universal message; placed next to hauntingly emotional music by Tallis, Vaughan Williams and Britten, the Stabat Mater becomes a celebration both of tradition and of radical renewal.
Pre-concert event 6.15pm: Composer James MacMillan joins the young musicians of Britten Sinfonia Academy on stage for a discussion and performance.
