Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Through The Ages - Time Travel Through 500 Years

Step back in time at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard next weekend to meet some of the characters that have shaped the site over the centuries. Meet the Tudor craftsmen who equipped the sailors of Henry VIII’s Navy and see demonstrations of arrow-making, musket ball casting and leather working. HMS Warrior 1860 will play host to a Royal Visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert complete with a Guard of Honour.

The sailors and marines of the Georgian era will be on hand to give an insight into the Navy in Nelson’s day. Meet the officers and men of the ships company. Watch out for the bos’n and his men, always on the lookout for new recruits with the infamous Press Gang! Hear tales from the Battle of Trafalgar and see demonstrations of cooking from the era.

Step forward to the 20th century to join the Royal Navy of the First World War and hear about the Gallipoli campaign in the new gallery ‘Gallipoli – Myth & Memory’. See the Army of the 1940s as they prepare for D-Day then meet sailors from the present day.

The event will also give you the chance to explore some of the attractions and view HM Naval Base from the water on one of the hourly harbour tours.
