Roses And Castles
Roses and Castles tells the story of the English canals from the 18th century to the present day, by following the fortunes of a canal family and their boat, Phoenix, across nearly two hundred years of history.
Based on the playwright’s experiences as a boatman living on the Grand Union Canal and inspired by his training with the National Theatre’s War Horse production, Roses and Castles is based on solid oral and written historical research, weaving actual canal life and real stories into the plot. Told in a personal and intimate way, it features historical and original songs and music by Phil Underwood.
There will be an opportunity for the audience to participate in a Q&A with the author and director following the show.
The development of this work is being supported by the Creative Learning Department at New Theatre Royal Portsmouth, as well as by Director and award-winning dramaturge Bernie C Byrnes.
