Pericles
Pericles, Prince of Tyre, is forced to flee his own kingdom and wander the world. Following a shipwreck, he meets Princess Thaisa and wins her for his wife. Months later, however, in another sea-storm, Thaisa dies in childbirth and her body is committed to the deep. The grief-stricken Pericles takes comfort in his baby daughter, Marina, but fosters her with friends. Years pass. Can report of Marina’s death be true? And can Thaisa really return to life?
The spirit of fairy tale is never far from the surface of Pericles, the first of Shakespeare’s late romances. Imbued with music, miracles and the constant presence of the sea, it introduces many of the key themes and concerns that were to recur in Shakespeare’s final plays.
*Audience choice on June 26th at 2:00pm!
What’s it like to go to the theatre and not know what you’re going to see? For one performance only, take part in Shakespeare’s Globe’s democratic theatrical experiment to find out! The troupe of versatile actors will offer up a choice of three plays, The Comedy of Errors, Pericles or Twelfth Night.
It will be up to you to vote for which of these three plays you want to see. The rules are simple: the loudest cheer wins, and the action starts straight away. Actors call it ‘terrifying’, audiences say it’s ‘exhilarating.’ So scream and shout as loud as you can for the play you want to see. This is an experience that you do not want to miss.
