Rise Up
Rise Up, a new play from Theatre Centre, the award-winning team behind 2011’s Best Play for Young Audiences, is in Oxford in September at the start of a UK tour – hoping to inspire a new generation of young people to change the world.
Drawing from the stories of the Freedom Riders – principled citizens taking a stand against racist laws in the American Deep South – the play draws parallels between the early 1960s and modern day struggles for equality.
The play has been written by Lisa Evans – a writer for Eastenders and Holby City as well as award-winning plays for younger audiences – and directed by Natalie Wilson, artistic director of Theatre Centre, a theatre company that has been touring new plays across the UK since 1953.
Touring to over forty schools and eight venues between September and December 2015, the stories of the Freedom Riders are told by four British actor-storytellers, using the perspective of the 21st century to bring history to life with humour, heart and hopefulness.
Suitable for ages 13 years.
