Great Children's Books And How To Spot Them
The most successful children's books editor of the modern age David Fickling is joined by some of his award-winning and most successful authors Mal Peet Lisa Williamson and Phil Earle to discuss what makes a great children's book.Fickling is editor of Philip Pullman's Northern Lights trilogy of The Boy in Striped Pyjamas The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and the editor who first suggested Jacqueline Wilson turn her writing attention from teenagers to nine-year-olds also pairing her with Nick Sharratt so he can stake a claim as the most successful children's books editor of the modern age. Three years ago he left giant Random House (now Penguin Random House) to set up his own company in Oxford David Fickling Books. As the list enters its second year of publishing Fickling describes his work with great children's authors the spark he looks for in a manuscript and the way a good book can be made a great book when author and editor work together. Also adding their own perspective are Mal Peet winner of the Carnegie Medal Lisa Williamson author of the much praised debut The Art of Being Normal and David Fickling Books sales director and author of Being Billy Phil Earle.
