Lunchtime Lecture / Recital
As a prelude to the evening concert in Fotheringhay, Dr Magnus Williamson, with members of the vocal ensemble, Stile Antico, will introduce and demonstrate the music of the Elizabethan ‘Sadler’ Partbooks and explain their local significance. These important manuscripts, copied by John Sadler who was the schoolmaster of Fotheringhay and Oundle from the 1540s to the 1570s, contain iconic masterpieces such as Thomas Tallis’s sublime settings of the Lamentations.
Sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of the Tudor Partbooks research project, this event will demonstrate how choirbooks, partbooks and other Renaissance music manuscripts were used in practice. Performance ends at approximately 2pm
