Idumea Quartet

Blending tradition, innovation and whimsy in equal measure, the Idumea Quartet deconstructs and reassembles Appalachian folk music whilst drawing strong influences and incorporating musical elements from other genres.

The bands name derives from 'Idumea', song number 47b in The Sacred Harp tunebook, a fundamental source of early American traditional music.

Using a classical string quartet format whilst coming from a shared background in traditional music, the quartet seeks to bring the traditional repertoire into conversation with a chamber music aesthetic. Add harmonized singing into the mix and the result is an astonishing sound, which is as high and lonesome as it is symphonic!
