Edge Hill University Second Year Drama Students present a season of plays by Federico Garcia Lorca

The Theatre is a school of tears and laughter – Lorca

The greatest Spanish playwright of the twentieth century was murdered 80 years ago by fascists in the early days of the Spanish Civil War. In these plays, his three great masterpieces, love and loss, longing and duende, the spirit of the earth, fuse in passionate dances of life and death.

Lorca spoke of his inspiration for his final great work: “a very old widow who kept an inexorable and tyrannical watch over her unmarried daughters. They were prisoners deprived of all free will, so I never spoke with them; but I saw them pass like shadows, always silent and always dressed in black”. This acclaimed adaptation shows us the astonishing modernity of the writing, speaking powerfully as both political metaphor of oppression and compelling domestic drama.

“Laughter - black and bitter - is to modern tastes, and is caught deftly in David Hare's vivid and sardonic new version” The Daily Telegraph
